Why We Opened Okan Diner
Okan Diner exists to give San Diego a warm, neighborhood Japanese dining room, the kind you can walk into on a weeknight without planning a whole evening around it. We wanted a place in Clairemont Mesa where the food is authentic, the plates are made for sharing, and the atmosphere feels like an izakaya: relaxed, a little loud, and easy to linger in.
The menu is deliberately broad. You will find yakitori off the grill, udon and ramen, sushi, and our kamameshi, a rice dish cooked in a pot and ready in about 20 minutes. Some dishes bring ingredients and flavor combinations that may be new to you. That is part of the invitation. Ask your server what they would order, or simply point to the one that sounds unfamiliar and see what happens.
